I've been wanting to work on a more semi-realistic kind of style, that was very bright and vibrant, but also unique and interesting. Something involving BIPOC folks with their eyes closed for a kind of vulnerability and beauty that we don't usually see in popular media. Colour and representation were the goal for this series.
Initially I started with some simple but glitchy styled illustrations with pops of colour on a greyscale background, which is a mini-series that I'm still working on and dubbing as "Midnight Vibes". Feeling unsure I used a more comforably style while exploring pastels (Space Vibes), and more vibrant colours. All of the process illustrations metamorphosed into the illustrations that are below.
Exploring the various uses of gradients and vibrant colours has been enjoyable for me. Whether it's as an accent, or a focus I have found it to be deeply enriching for my brain, so I hope you do too. I was going for contrast and an uplifting feeling throughout. The goal was to create something elegant and striking.
Addiitionally braids have always been fascinating to me. What you can do with them, add to them, see in them. How they have a history of being used as maps, or to distinguish tribal areas, status and more.
