I decided to make a zine (a mini magazine). It's something I've always wanted to do. Since all of the artwork was by me, I went with something raw that had a general overarching theme of mental health. The target audience is people who have mental health struggles and need uplifting reminders of goodness.
I was heavily inspired by the DIY age of punk. The use of vibrant colour, contrasting with black and white was very important. Creating layers of interest and complexity were a focus in this zine project.
I started by choosing a colour scheme. After that I sketched out some rough flatplans, and then brought them into Adobe Illustrator to refine them in vector format.
The blending of traditional art and digital was something I had in mind for adding layers of depth to the project. Digitizing sketches, and paintings were the next part of this process. Then I scanned and took photos of other pieces of art, and torn up paper with writing on it. The last components I took from the real world were photos I took from my phone, and edited in Lightroom.
This was definitely an enjoyable experiment in mixed media. Ultimately I feel it came together really well. You can check out the zine below. I do recommend that you view it in fullscreen, if possible.
